Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, a 17th Century German engraver, illustrated vast and unique botanical work. His collection, containing over 1,000 hand-colored plates, is the most significant work of mid-18th century German botanical illustration. Though scientifically inaccurate, the illustrations depict each subject with a distinctively simplified graphic stylization and soft watercolor palette. Weinmanns prints, many based on the drawings of the great botanical artist Georg Ehret, achieve a surprizingly modern elegance not seen in other works of the period.
