1682-1749 A celebrated flower painter, Van Huysum was the eldest son of Juste Van Huys and was apprenticed by his father in the study of interior and garden decor. He showed little interest in his father's business and began to study nature and gained fame as a floral painter. Florists in Holland vied to supply him with the choicest flowers for the subjects of his paintings which he arranged in elegant bas-relief vases. He introduced bird's nests, butterflies, and dew drops to give his paintings a natural illusion and setting.
