1888-1972 Alfred Mitchell was the first serious artist to develop his talent and spend his entire professional career in San Diego, California. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship to Europe. While his art is firmly anchored in the Realist tradition, Mitchell was intrigued by the atmosphere of experiment created in America by the Armory Show of 1913. A member of the Plein Air school of painting, Mitchell's love of the land was reflected in his work. Because of his teachings and dedication to art, Mitchell is also recognized as a major contributor to the San Diego art community. |
